The true measure of a society´s freedom is how it treats its dissidents and other marginalized groups, not how it treats its good loyalists. We shouldn´t have to be faithful loyalists of the powerful to be free from state surveillance.

Glenn Greenwald
About This Quote

The good loyalists of the powerful are the only ones that get to live in a society that claims to protect its citizens from state surveillance. The good loyalists get to live without any limitations on what they can do or say. When someone is not a good loyalist of the powerful then they are subject to state surveillance, however, they are also the only ones that will be persecuted for speaking out about wrongdoing. If an individual is in a position of power then they will speak out in defense of the powerless when in fact their only goal is to make themselves look better by defending their position.

They will always be ready to throw another person under the bus in order to save themselves. The true measure of a society´s freedom is how it treats its dissidents and other marginalized groups, not how it treats its good loyalists.
